Plea deal in horse abuse case

44 year-old John Steffan has pleaded no contest to animal cruelty.

The Eudora man was charged back in July after the Lawrence Humane Society seized his 15 year-old pony. The animal's hooves were severely overgrown and it could barely walk. The pony is recovering and is now available for adoption.

Stefan's attorney told the court on Monday that his client had money problems and couldn't afford proper care. He's now ordered to pay more than $4,000 in restitution. He's not allowed to own any horses during his probation period.
