Thefts top KU campus crimes

LAWRENCE - Theft tops the list of crimes on KU’s campus. According to KU Public Safety’s online records, thefts made up about 50% of crimes that happened on campus.

"When you’re younger, you don’t think there is someone out there that might take advantage of you," says KU freshman Lindsay Marsden. Marcus Tetwiler, a sophomore at KU says a few of his friends have reported incidents after walking home from the library late at night.

Jo Hardesty, Director of Legal Services for Students says college students carry a lot of valuable items, like laptops and cell phones, and they need to realize that even though they’re on campus and it seems safe, there are still people out there that are going to try and take your belongings.

Over the past five years the numbers of thefts have decreased, but students say a lot of people make themselves easy targets.

Marsden says campus would be a key place to go if thieves wanted to steal something and get away with it.

Locking doors and being aware that stealing is a problem is the advice students are giving to their fellow Jayhawks.
