Lawrence facing lifeguard shortage

Written by
The Lawrence Outdoor Aquatic Center is set to open Memorial Day weekend, and while the pool may be filled, many lifeguard spots are not.

The city is currently recruiting lifeguards and are seeing fewer applications this year. Parks and Rec usually employs 170 to 180 lifeguards during the summer season. Right now, there is staff to operate just one pool safely.

"We may have to close some areas of the pool down, like slides and diving boards, through the day to maintain our level of swimmer safety," said Jimmy Gibbs, recreation program manager.

Lifeguard requirements are a current American Red Cross lifeguard training certificiation and be at least 16 years old. Once three prerequisiting endurance skills are complete, students can take lifeguard classes.
