LAWRENCE - While the dog kennels at the Lawrence Humane Society undergo repairs, 50 dogs are living in temporary homes. One such dog is Helen, a one-year-old deaf female. Helen is adjusting well to her new home with the Walkers, who own 6 other dogs. The family says she can’t hear their whistle but she follows behind the other dogs and gets along just fine. Helen was one of the last dogs to find a foster home, likely because of her special need, but the Walkers say they are considering adopting her.
“If we don't keep her I sure hope a special family gets her because she's a good dog and she wants to please,” said Kathy Walker.
The dogs have been in foster homes since last weekend while kennel floors are being painted. Officials say the dog adoption room is in bad need of repair.
“The interiors of the kennels are very old so we were actually required by the state to get the interiors of the floors and walls painted so that we can sanitize properly,” said Kayse Aschenbrenner, the director of animal welfare at the Lawrence Humane Society.
The work will take a week to complete and the dogs will return to the shelter this weekend.
If the Walkers don’t adopt Helen, they say she will be best suited with a family who has other dogs.
