Lawrence - With a new leader at the helm, the Lawrence Humane Society has made some drastic changes. Not only are the changes matching more pets with new homes, they're also lowering the shelter's kill rate. Staff members say everyone, even the animals, are noticing the difference.
According to the humane society, the shelter has increased its live release rates, which includes adoptions, returning stray animals to owners or transferring the animals to other shelters which can place them. From January to July of this year, the release rates for cats has gone up 35%, while the release rates for dogs is up 1.2% from the same time last year.
"It makes things go a lot smoother now," said Kennel Technician Thomas Davie. "At first when we had the larger cages, we had cats that would be here for years. With the way things are now, we can't even keep kittens here because they're getting adopted so fast."
Another sign of the shelter's progress is the results of its "Red, White & Bully" campaign. Officials say more than ten bully pit bull found new homes, whereas in the past the shelter would be lucky to get even one pit bull adopted.
