Lawrence- The University of Kansas and the City of Lawrence held a celebration this weekend, honoring a former football coach who touched many lives. Now residents will drive down a street named after him.

Plenty of people drive down 11th Street every day. Part of the heavily traveled road now has a new name. From Mississippi to Missouri Street, it’s been renamed to Fambrough Drive. The Lawrence City Commission voted in March to recognize former KU football coach Don Fambrough in this way. On Saturday, the new name became official with a dedication ceremony. The event included Lawrence city leaders and Fambrough’s son Preston. It was held at the intersection of 11th and Maine. The University of Kansas is also renaming a stretch of road after the coach. Maine Street behind the Memorial Stadium Press Box will be known as Fambrough Way.

Fambrough passed away last September at the age of 88. He led the Jayhawks as head football coach for eight straight seasons in two different stints. Those here say he had a tremendous impact on his players. He was known for being passionate about KU and the City of Lawrence.
