Triple digit temperatures can't stop longtime Lawrence tradition

Lawrence - From up on the hill, Don “Red Dog” Gardner shouts out exercises, and the crowd below follows right along. The free community workout known around Lawrence as Red Dog’s Dog Days draws people of all ages to come out and get moving.

Hundreds of people were pushing their bodies to the limit, doing push-ups, sit-ups and burpees. But it wasn’t just “Red Dog” they were battling; the athletes were also going toe to toe with Mother Nature.

But not even the 103 degree heat can stop these men and women from pushing through the pain. “Red Dog” says you can never be too careful. On Wednesday, he cut back on the number of exercise reps as a precaution. And while working out in extreme heat can be dangerous, for these athletes, the blazing sun is never an excuse to stay home. They say if you stay hydrated, you’ll be just fine.
