Topeka — Gov. Sam Brownback is making $56.5 million cuts in the Kansas budget, taking the biggest chunk from aid to the state's 289 public school districts. The governor released the details Friday afternoon after making the announcement earlier in the day. Cuts to schools total $50.2 million, or $75 off base state aid per student. That drops the per-student amount from $4,012 to $3,937. Brownback acted after legislative negotiators failed to reach a compromise on a budget-trimming bill after weeks of discussions. The cuts affect the budget for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30. The reductions get the Kansas budget to a zero balance with no revenue cushion.
