We take a look at the Free State High School football team as they prepare for the 2012 season.

Not only is Amber Hicks the captain of the Free State Girls soccer team, but she is fluent in Spanish and plans to major in it next year in college.

One prepster stood above the rest this month when it comes to athletics and academics. On the hardwood at Free State, this Firebird plays a vital role in the starting lineup. Away from the floor, she still finds time to lock down a 3.9 GPA. Jackie Garcia is our January Intrust Bank High School Scholar Athlete of the Month.

The stakes couldn't be any higher for the city showdown. During week three of district play, serious playoff implications are on the line as both Lawrence High and Free State are fighting for a birth to the State Tournament.

Since falling to Olathe South in the season opener 35-14, it's been all good for the Free State High Football team. This Thursday, Bob Lisher's squad hits the road in search of its fifth straight victory.

This September, we honor one of the hardest working prepsters in 6-A athletics. Not only is this firebird the point guard of the girls basketball team, but she's also focused on earning a college scholarship for track and cross country. Congratulations to Lynn Robinson, our September Intrust Bank High School Scholar Athlete of the Month.
