The NCAA has denied an eligibility waiver appeal for University of Kansas sophomore wide receiver Justin McCay.
McCay will have to sit out the 2012 season and will be eligible to compete for the Jayhawks in 2013 as a junior, KU athletics officials said.
“I’m extremely disappointed that common sense did not prevail,” said Charlie Weis, head football coach, regarding the denied appeal. “I have read all of the information on this case and it is a shame that this case resulted in a rejection.”
McCay had requested a waiver of the NCAA's rule that requires transfers to sit out a year of competition. The decision was appealed to the NCAA subcommittee for legislative research, which is the only group with the authority to deviate from the waiver guidelines.
